1916 BBW Replay Week 16 Summary - July 24-July 30, 1916

Week Sixteen of the 1916 BBW Replay is in the books, and another good week it was. Our two league leaders refuse to back off or slow down, and even if they don't win every game, they just keep winning and expanding their lead. As we are now at nine weeks remaining, or two months, time is starting to run out on the remainder of the AL and NL teams that want to move up into the top spot.

The Philadelphia A's are working on a ten-game losing streak as Connie Mack continues to rotate through various college hires to see who can or can't play. He mixes the kids in with his veterans, and while they play hard every day, it does seem rather hopeless. This past Tuesday the St. Louis Browns pounded out twenty-six hits and scored twenty-three runs against the helpless Athletics pitchers, and even though the losing streak continued, the A's refuse to roll over and they keep fighting back.

 

In the AL, the first-place Red Sox had two extended series versus the second-place Tigers over the past two weeks, and while Detroit was confident that it could slice into the Boston lead, the Red Sox ended up further ahead than when they started. Boston has multiple good players, not really any superstars (it's a little early to hang that label on Babe Ruth), the team takes turns providing key hits and makes good defensive plays, and a solid pitching rotation continues to throw strong arms out there every day. Boston starts next week with three more games against Detroit, and the Tigers know they are running out of time.

In the NL, Brooklyn, like Boston in the NL, gets timely hitting in crucial moments from up and down their lineup; they play a solid defense, and manager Wilbert Robinson always has a rested pitcher ready to take the mound. The Robins ended this past week by taking 2-of-3 from second-place Cincinnati, and after an off-day on Sunday, these two teams have a doubleheader on Monday, and then single games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Much like the Tigers in the AL, the Reds are starting to run out of time, so we'll see who wants it more.

The Phillies continue their hot streak, but they may have buried themselves to well at the start of the season to be a real threat in the NL. The Boston Braves have played only eighty-two games, the fewest of any team in either league. They have three doubleheaders in the upcoming week, and by the end of this coming Saturday will have reached the ninety-games-played mark. They are still behind, though, but in looking ahead, they have two upcoming stretches of four or five consecutive doubleheaders. Boston has plenty of pitching, but their lack of hitting has condemned them to the middle of the pack.

Monday's games will be played on the final day of July, which means that August games begin on Tuesday, August, September, nine weeks, and it will be time for post-season baseball. That can only mean one thing - let's go play!

I completed my 1938 BBW Replay in December and have spent the winter months getting my 1916 BBW Replay ready to start. Retirement may have issues, but being able to spend my time playing APBA is not one of them. I had previously purchased the 1916 disk and card set last summer in anticipation of kicking this off. The disk has 400 players included on it, which means I had to add 127 additional players to complete the set. That is a lot of players. Why so many? There are several reasons:   There is always some level of churn every season with players getting their proverbial "cup of coffee" with the big club, and this season is no different. 1916 BBW Replay Week 3 Summary - April 24-30, 1916

Philadelphia (NL) Manager Pat Moran Week Three of the 1916 BBW Replay is in the books, and it was another interesting week of baseball. In both leagues, the East Coast teams are still playing on the East Coast, facing their East Coast brethren, and of course, the Midwest teams are still moving about the Midwest to get their early games in. Unfortunately, the NL teams have had a streak of bad weather to contend with, and by the end of Week Three, they find themselves having played twelve fewer games than the AL. It is early, and this should be easy to rectify over the course of the upcoming season. Every team is eyeing the upcoming roster cutdown date, so while teams do have a regular starting lineup, managers are always looking to slip in a prospect or two to get them at-bats or a few innings pitched before making a final roster decision. 1916 BBW Summary Week 5 Results - May 8-14, 1916

Brooklyn Manager Wilbert Robinson Week Five of the 1916 BBW Replay is in the books, and it was another week dominated by pitching (as it should be). Shutouts, extra innings, and games coming down to the last at-bat … it all makes for a fun and interesting replay. In the AL, Boston still holds on to its lead in the standings, as it is second in both team hitting and pitching (but last in team fielding). Mostly, they just seem to know when they need the runs or when they can back off and rely on their strong pitching. Washington and Detroit remain right on their heels, and both would love to move into the top spot, but both have struggled to provide a consistent attack, whether with the bat or with their pitching.   In the NL, Brooklyn slipped past Chicago into first place as of the end of the Sunday games.
