1916 BBW Replay Week 3 Summary - April 24-30, 1916

Week Three of the 1916 BBW Replay is in the books, and it was another interesting week of baseball. In both leagues, the East Coast teams are still playing on the East Coast, facing their East Coast brethren, and of course, the Midwest teams are still moving about the Midwest to get their early games in. Unfortunately, the NL teams have had a streak of bad weather to contend with, and by the end of Week Three, they find themselves having played twelve fewer games than the AL. It is early, and this should be easy to rectify over the course of the upcoming season.

Every team is eyeing the upcoming roster cutdown date, so while teams do have a regular starting lineup, managers are always looking to slip in a prospect or two to get them at-bats or a few innings pitched before making a final roster decision. Several players have been farmed out already, and several more are in the queue this coming week. Many of these players won't appear again at the Major League level, plus many of them will join various military branches once the US commitment to join World War One is initiated.

Philadelphia (NL) Team
In the AL, Boston continues to ride their hot start and sits atop the AL. Washington, Detroit, and Chicago are right on their heels, though. The Red Sox, a battle-hardened group that won last year's World Series, are going to be a tough team to beat. Boston acquired outfielder Tillie Walker before the season started as a replacement for Tris Speaker, but unfortunately, Walker has spent most of the last two weeks unable to play. The team doctors state he should be scheduled to return to lay this coming week.

With pitching-dominated teams and playing a lot of close games, I want to be aggressive as the manager, but it is not easy to find that balance. I have had quite a few runners thrown trying to score in late tied or one-run game situations. I have made three attempts at stealing home and am one for three so far. I think I am being aggressive with regard to steal and sacrifice attempts, but I am well behind in both already, and am just looking to catch up.

Regardless, 1916 is a fun season, with plenty of more-or-less evenly matched teams, so I am not expecting any team to run away with it. This replay will likely come down to the final weeks of the season before the pennant winners are locked in, so in the meantime, let's go play!
