1916 BBW Replay Week 15 Summary - July 17-July 23, 1916

Week Fifteen of the 1916 BBW Replay is in the books, and it was another exciting 1916 week. Plenty of pitching, shutouts, and extra-inning games, with a sixteen-inning game and a twenty-two-inning game where Washington finally defeated Chicago in the second game of a doubleheader. Walter Johnson threw nineteen innings in this one and came away with no decision for all his effort. Imagine the end of the day, the sun quickly setting, the umpires hurrying the players on and off the field, and then finally, a victory for the home team. Twenty-two innings is still a lot of zeroes, though. 

In the AL, Boston won four of five games at home versus second-place Detroit, setting back the Tigers, but they were able to extend their own lead to nine full games. Can the Red Sox successfully close this out and win the AL pennant? It certainly seems so. Boston also became the first team to reach sixty wins - they just steadily keep winning, with a solid lineup, solid defense, and pitching so far that has been outstanding.

 

While Detroit ended the week with three consecutive losses, so did third -place New York, thus safely preserving the Tigers' spot at second place. The news of the week was that the long-slumbering bats of the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians suddenly came alive this past week, and while these two may not be able to reach the pennant, if they can maintain their sudden surge and make havoc for all the teams ahead of them.

In the NL, Brooklyn, similar to Boston in the NL, was able to slowly increase its lead over second-place Cincinnati, now up to eight full games. Cincinnati's performance is a bit of a mystery - the actual Cincinnati (309) and the replay Cincinnati (298) have scored virtually the same number of runs, but on the other hand, actual Cincinnati (381) gave up 115 more runs than replay Cincinnati (266) at the same point of the season. This has resulted in the Reds being +12 in wins and residing in second place instead of floundering in seventh place.

Boston has played the fewest games of any team in either league with only seventy-seven games under their belt. This means it took them fifteen weeks to get to their halfway point of the season. It also means they will have to squeeze in their remaining games in the remaining ten weeks. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are both at seventy-nine games played, so they have a lot of ground left to cover as well.

 

In looking ahead at the upcoming schedule, I can see plenty of doubleheaders to be played, plus plenty of cross-country travel on the horizon. We will be at the end of July at the end of this upcoming week, so we are close to reaching the final two months of the season. So, as always, let's go play!

I completed my 1938 BBW Replay in December and have spent the winter months getting my 1916 BBW Replay ready to start. Retirement may have issues, but being able to spend my time playing APBA is not one of them. I had previously purchased the 1916 disk and card set last summer in anticipation of kicking this off. The disk has 400 players included on it, which means I had to add 127 additional players to complete the set. That is a lot of players. Why so many? 1916 BBW Replay Week 3 Summary - April 24-30, 1916

Philadelphia (NL) Manager Pat Moran Week Three of the 1916 BBW Replay is in the books, and it was another interesting week of baseball. In both leagues, the East Coast teams are still playing on the East Coast, facing their East Coast brethren, and of course, the Midwest teams are still moving about the Midwest to get their early games in. Unfortunately, the NL teams have had a streak of bad weather to contend with, and by the end of Week Three, they find themselves having played twelve fewer games than the AL. It is early, and this should be easy to rectify over the course of the upcoming season. Every team is eyeing the upcoming roster cutdown date, so while teams do have a regular starting lineup, managers are always looking to slip in a prospect or two to get them at-bats or a few innings pitched before making a final roster decision. 1916 BBW Summary Week 5 Results - May 8-14, 1916

Brooklyn Manager Wilbert Robinson Week Five of the 1916 BBW Replay is in the books, and it was another week dominated by pitching (as it should be). Shutouts, extra innings, and games coming down to the last at-bat … it all makes for a fun and interesting replay. In the AL, Boston still holds on to its lead in the standings, as it is second in both team hitting and pitching (but last in team fielding). Mostly, they just seem to know when they need the runs or when they can back off and rely on their strong pitching. Washington and Detroit remain right on their heels, and both would love to move into the top spot, but both have struggled to provide a consistent attack, whether with the bat or with their pitching.   In the NL, Brooklyn slipped past Chicago into first place as of the end of the Sunday games.
