1916 BBW Replay Week 8 Summary - May 29-June 04, 1916

Week Eight of the 1916 BBW Replay is in the books, and it was a busy week with a Memorial Day doubleheader explosion, plus plenty of other doubleheaders throughout the week as teams start the scramble to catch up on missed games before they get too far into the season. There are three NL teams that haven't reached the forty-games-played mark, but they are close, and this should be rectified in the next few days. In looking ahead, it doesn’t appear that any teams will reach the fifty-game mark this coming week, but it won't be long. The schedule has now left May behind us, and we have moved into the first few days of June, so things are moving along at a good speed.

In the AL, Boston remains strong, managing to combine enough hitting to go with their strong pitching, plus Carl Mays, who underwent a pre-season tonsillectomy, has now returned to the rotation, and in his second start of the season this past Sunday, he no-hit the Cleveland Indians, the second no-hitter of the season:

Despite Boston's strong start, second-place Detroit has hung in there so far. Pitching was always a concern for the Tigers, but the starters have been strong so far. Washington and New York have been hang9ng aro8nd the upper echelon of the AL standings all season, but so far neither has been able to muscle much of a serious threat to Boston. Chicago and Cleveland currently sit in fifth and seventh place, where they have been mired most of the season. Both were picked to have much stronger seasons, but neither team has been able to turn it on yet. Cleveland started out the week going 3-1-1 versus St. Louis, but by the end of the week, they were back down in seventh place, behind the Browns, who had ended a ten-game losing streak earlier in the week.

1916 Washington Nationals
In the NL, the Boston Braves had moved into Brooklyn for a five-game series to start the week, with the intention of digging into the Robins' lead in the NL. Unfortunately for Boston, Brooklyn won all five games. They were all close, highlighting the Braves' offensive woes, and by the end of the week Boston was sitting below .500.  Behind Brooklyn are New York and Cincinnati, two teams that were supposed to find themselves towards the bottom of the NL standings but instead are winning and finding themselves in the hunt for the NL pennant. Both teams have exhibited good pitching and timely hitting so far this season, and both are hoping to keep it up all season.

1916 Washington Nationals
The Cubs led the NL for the first month of the season, but they have struggled to put together good pitching and good hitting. After Boston got pushed around by Brooklyn, the Braves moved into Chicago and delivered some pushing of their own, cutting the Cubs' lead over the fifth-place Braves to 1.5 games. Philadelphia remains the biggest mystery in the NL. After their World Series appearance in 1915, everyone expected the Phillies to make a serious challenge for the flag. So far, though, it has been a struggle for Philadelphia to avoid the NL cellar.

It's a twenty-five-week season, and we have completed eight weeks, so we are declaring that we are now at the one-third point of the season. Let's take a look at the league statistical leaders:

Looking ahead, late last week kicked off a cross-country road trip with the AL East Coast teams moving into the Midwest, while in the NL, it is the opposite, with the NL Midwest franchises rotating through their peers on the East Coast. The schedule looks pretty lean, though, with plenty of days off for teams, all weather-related, I am assuming. The season marches on regardless, but after catching up on previously missed games, it looks like teams are back in the hole. You can only play the games on the schedule, though, so let's go play!
