1916 BBW Replay Week 10 Summary - June 12-June 18, 1916

Chicago (NL) Manager
Joe Tinker
Week Ten of the 1916 BBW Replay is in the books, and it was another interesting week. There wasn't much when it came to shuffling in the standings, but the news in this regard was that the Philadelphia Phillies ended the week on a six-game winning streak and suddenly found themselves within a game of fifth place and a game-and-a-half of fourth place. They were too good a team to stay down forever, but now, can they keep it up and keep moving up the standings?

Only one team in the AL (Philadelphia) hasn't reached the 50-games-played mark, but they will reach that level after the completion of their next game. Three games in the NL have surpassed that level, and a quick look at the upcoming handful of doubleheaders yet to come. The NL Midwest teams have already departed the East Coast, and NL Teams will begin intra-regional play upon the start of next week, while the AL East Coast teams have just departed the Midwest and their full schedule will resume in another day or two.

1916 Chicago (NL) Cubs
In the AL, Boston plays "Steady Eddie" as they didn't have a particularly strong week, but neither did their closest competition, so the Red Sox still have a somewhat comfortable 4.5 game lead at the end of the week. Detroit ended the week hosting Philadelphia, but instead of a rout, the A's jumped up and scored nineteen runs in winning the final two games of the series. The Athletics remain in last place in the AL with little hope of anything else, but Connie Mack has his Athletics playing hard, and while they do get steamrolled from time to time, they are still giving it their best.

1916 Chicago (NL) Players
In the NL, Brooklyn is currently sitting on a 7.0 game lead over New York and Cincinnati, while these two teams, plus Chicago and Boston, right behind them, all seem to be spinning their wheels, with none of them making a serious charge up the standings. They, too, see the Phillies right behind them, and if Philadelphia can keep it up, it won’t be hard for them to keep moving up the standings and into Brooklyn’s rear-view mirror.

There were no no-hitters this week, but more than a handful of shutouts as well as several 1-0 games as the pitching continues to dominate. However, the exciting feat that did occur this week was when Boston Red Sox center fielder Tillie Walker knocked three triples in a game in Chicago on Saturday.

We are halfway through June and are nearing the halfway point in the season, and there are still plenty of questions to be answered. Can the Phillies maintain their current hot streak and move into the upper reaches of the NL standings? Will Cleveland find their own footing and move up in the AL standings? Pittsburgh languishes at the bottom of the NL standings but will start the coming week with a worse win-loss record than the Athletics. They are a better team than that … aren't they? Regardless, this only means one thing - let's go play!
