1916 BBW Replay Week 4 Summary - May 1-7, 1916

Week Four of the 1916 BBW Replay is in the books, and it was another exciting week of play. This week saw the strong pitching that was the hallmark of the 1916 season assert itself with plenty of strong performances resulting in close games, late-inning comebacks, and shutouts. There were two games worthy of special mention - the first was a twenty-one-inning battle, where neither team scored until the final inning, but even then, Boston came back with two runs in the bottom of the final inning to get the comeback win over Philadelphia:

Two days later, we had the first no-hitter of the season when Boston (AL) hurler Dutch Leonard shut down the New York Yankees:

In the AL, Boston's early hot start is still paying off as they still reside atop the AL standings. They did end the week with four consecutive wins to assure their lead, but behind them, there are several other teams that are playing well, also. Fortunately for Boston, "playing well" also means that the other AL teams have not been able to put forth a concerted effort and have not been able to apply pressure on the first-place Red Sox. As always, it is early in the season, and if Boston wants to maintain its lead, they know they have a long way to go.

In the NL, Chicago had dominated the top of the standings for most of the first few weeks of the season, but similar to the AL, there are several teams nipping at their heels. As a league, the NL had played eleven fewer games than the AL due to early-season weather interruptions, so as those games are made up, the challenge will be squarely on Chicago to hold on to its lead. Brooklyn had struggled out of the box, but during these past two weeks, they have clawed their way up to second place.

League-wise, all teams are planning to make their cuts to get down to the prescribed roster size, so plenty of cuts will be occurring over the next week. Also occurring over the next week, the first series of intra-regional contests will begin as the AL East teams will play host to the AL West teams, while in the NL, it is the NL East teams training their way westward to begin their first tour of the NL West teams.
