1916 BBW Replay Week 2 Summary - April 17-23, 1916

Boston (NL) Manager
George Stallings
Week Two of the 1916 BBW Replay is in the books, the first whole week of the season, and teams are off and running. As expected, the pitching dominates, but every once in a while, an offensive game might break out. I am being aggressive, at least in my mind, with regard to stolen bases and sacrifices, but even though it is early, I can see that I am falling behind, so I will need to stay on top of that. My homeruns are coming at about one per day for each league, although the Yankees hit five homeruns in two days on a trip to Washington this past week. I am assuming most of these are inside-the-park homeruns, but I know they aren’t all inside-the-park homeruns … I intend to stay neutral on this … a homerun is a homerun.

In the AL, Boston is off to a fast start (8-2). However, this fast start is likely tied directly to playing the lowly Philadelphia A's six times (5-1) in their first ten games. In the 1916 season, five different AL teams held first place at some point during the season, so I am expecting quite a bit of churn in the standings as there really isn’t a super team that can run away with the AL Pennant

In the NL, it was Chicago (7-2) that got to a fast start as they went 5-1 versus Cincinnati in a home-and-away series. The NL has several hungry teams this season, so that lead, while welcome, will be in constant peril to whoever may hold it. Cincinnati third baseman Heinie Grosh hit for the cycle in an extra-inning loss to Chicago on Saturday. I am not expecting an abundance of those, but it is still exciting to see a player hit for the cycle.

We are a week-and-a-half into the 1916 season, so there are no real observations to make just yet. As we all know from our many years of APBA play, good pitching always beats good hitting, and vice versa. Pitching may have an advantage this season, but hitting is still part of the game. The days are getting longer, the weather is warming up (maybe not fast enough for me), my draft league draft is just about over, so let's go play!
